Quick Tip: Parallel Compression [VIDEO]

Parallel compression was once considered an industry secret — something high profile engineers used to get an edge on other engineers.  Fortunately for us, parallel compression is now one of the industry’s worst kept secrets, and it’s also very simple to do.

So what is parallel compression? In simple terms, it is blending an uncompressed or lightly compressed signal with an aggressively compressed version of that same signal. Doing this allows you to maintain the integrity of the dynamics in your original signal while still getting the sonic characteristics and benefits of a highly compressed signal. It’s quite literally the best of both worlds!

In this video, I explain how to apply the concept of parallel compression to drums, but of course, this technique can be applied to anything — vocals, guitars, bass, whatever you want! Experiment with parallel compression to take your mixes to the next level!
